We’re surrounded by messages telling us it’s time to reinvent ourselves. A new season…A new trend… A new colour… A new haircut… A new version of you! Sometimes it’s subtle, sometimes it’s impossible to ignore. However delivered, the message is often the same: – “you’d be happier if you just changed one more thing.”
Years ago, while writing my dissertation for my Visual Communications degree, I spent a lot of time looking at advertising and media and the way it influences the way we see ourselves. One idea stayed with me….The world is very good at creating a gap between who we are today and who we think we should be tomorrow. Annoyingly once we’ve closed one gap, another one quietly appears. Without the gap, people ain’t buying!
There’ll always be another trend, another product, another reason to believe you’re only one decision away from finally feeling confident and content. So does if confidence and fulfilment really works like that? Perpetually searching for for your next contentment fix doesn’t sound like peace to me! After more than twenty years of hairdressing, I’ve come to believe something much simpler. Maybe you don’t need a new look…Maybe you need your look!
“Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself.“
~ Coco Chanel
Trends Are Meant to Inspire, Not Define You
Don’t get me wrong—I love seeing new ideas. Hair trends keep our industry creative, and sometimes they introduce us to techniques, styles and colours we’d never have considered. But trends should be invitations, not instructions. The most memorable hairstyles I’ve created haven’t been copies of something on social media. They’ve come from the conversations me and my client have together. What suits your face? How much time do you actually want to spend styling your hair? What makes you feel comfortable? What makes you feel like yourself? Those answers are far more interesting than whatever happens to be trending this month.
Your Hair Has a Personality Too
Every head of hair behaves differently. Some hair loves movement. Some likes structure. Some refuses to do what it’s told (the kind that makes you swear a lot while looking in the mirror). The trick isn’t to fight your hair into becoming someone else’s. It’s to understand what it naturally wants to do and work with it. The same goes for you.
The right hairstyle isn’t just about face shape or colour analysis. It’s about your personality, your lifestyle, your confidence and the version of yourself you want to bring up to the surface.
The Best Hair Doesn't Always Turn Heads
Sometimes the best compliment isn’t “Your hair looks amazing.”…..It’s “You look really well.” People can’t quite explain what’s changed. You just seem more relaxed. More comfortable. More like yourself. That’s because truly great hair doesn’t always steal the spotlight. It quietly supports the person wearing it.
Finding Your Style Is a Collaboration
I don’t believe your hairstyle is something I choose for you. I think it’s something we uncover together. My job is to listen, observe, ask questions and bring experience to the table. Your job is to tell me how it feels to live with your hair. Is it easy to style? What pisses you off about your hair? Does it feel a little harsh around your face? Do you want something more bold and strong around your face? Do you feel a softer, sexier look is more you? Did you feel confident wearing it? Did you feel confident in styling it? That’s not because the first appointment wasn’t successful. It’s because the best, most personal styles are refined over time as a client goes and tries them on in real time. Not through chasing perfection, but through understanding yourself, your life and your hair.
A Place to Come Back To
Once you’ve found that style, the one that genuinely feels like you…It becomes the foundation. You can freshen it, soften it, go shorter, grow it longer or adapt it as your life changes, but you’re no longer starting from scratch every season. You’re building from something that already feels like “this is me!” That feeling of being ‘at home’ with yaself….that’s what everyone’s after. That underlying feeling of being comfortable enough to stop performing and simply show up as yourself. And perhaps this is what good hair should do. Not change who you are….just remove one more barrier between you and the person you’ve been all along. Because I don’t think the best hairstyles create a new version of you. I think they help you recognise the one that was there all along.
